On a Mac managed through a device management service, managedappdistributiond participates in installing, updating, repairing, and removing apps assigned by an organization. The same managed-distribution subsystem can also handle managed software packages when declarative device management is used. These responsibilities cover both required deployments chosen by an administrator and optional items that a user selects through an organization’s managed-app interface.

The daemon is part of macOS whether or not those features are currently in use. Merely finding managedappdistributiond in Activity Monitor or a network-usage list does not prove that a company, school, or other organization manages the Mac. On an unmanaged Mac with no managed content configured, the component will generally remain idle.
