Why is cloudphotod using so much network data?

cloudphotod is the built-in macOS agent responsible for iCloud Photos activity. Heavy traffic can be normal during an initial sync, a large import, or an original-photo download; Apple publishes no fixed normal-usage threshold.
What it is
cloudphotod is the background agent built into macOS for iCloud Photos. Apple’s system-provided manual page describes it as responsible for all iCloud Photos activity. In practical terms, cloudphotod coordinates the synchronization of photos, videos, and changes to the system photo library with iCloud.
The verified Apple component uses the code identifier com.apple.cloudphotod and is located at /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/CloudPhotoLibrary.framework/Versions/A/Support/cloudphotod. An instance that matches both that system location and code identifier belongs to macOS. The process name by itself is not enough to establish that a program at some other path is genuine.
cloudphotod may also be described as the iCloud Photos agent or daemon, but those labels refer to the same role: keeping the Mac’s photo library coordinated with iCloud Photos.
Why it talks to the network
Network activity begins whenever cloudphotod has photo-library work to synchronize. A first-time sync after enabling “Sync this Mac” can create substantial activity because the local and iCloud libraries need to be brought into agreement. Large photo or video imports can trigger uploads, while additions, edits, and deletions made on another device can trigger corresponding downloads or library updates on the Mac.
The storage option also matters. Selecting “Download Originals to this Mac” can require many full-resolution photos and videos to be transferred. With “Optimize Mac Storage” enabled, an original may not currently exist on the Mac; viewing or editing it can therefore cause the required original to be fetched.
Connections are associated with Apple Account authentication, iCloud services, and content-delivery infrastructure. Apple lists relevant categories such as *.icloud.com, *.icloud-content.com, *.icloud.apple.com, *.apple-cloudkit.com, *.apple-livephotoskit.com, and Apple CDN services. Apple does not publish a complete, cloudphotod-specific hostname list, so an exact exclusive endpoint inventory cannot be stated from the available evidence.
Some iCloud Photos transfers may also be attributed to supporting processes. The system configuration indicates that initial downloads can involve nsurlsessiond, cloudd, photolibraryd, and media-conversion services. A per-process view may therefore divide one photo-sync operation across several process names.
How much traffic is normal
There is no reliable fixed number of megabytes or gigabytes that defines normal cloudphotod traffic. Apple has not published such a threshold, and the useful comparison is the amount of photo and video data waiting to move.
After synchronization completes, cloudphotod may become nearly idle or use only a small amount of traffic for status checks and library changes. During the first sync, a large import, or an original download, it can sustain much heavier traffic. The peak volume can be on the same order as the originals waiting to transfer. A batch of videos will usually be much larger than the same number of photos, while an initial download may approach the size of the entire iCloud Photos library.
High usage is therefore not, by itself, evidence of a problem. Check the library synchronization status at the bottom of the Photos app first. That status can help distinguish expected transfer work from synchronization that appears paused or stuck.
Can you turn it off
Reducing bandwidth or temporarily allowing synchronization to pause is reasonable. Apple confirms that Low Data Mode can pause synchronization and that it can resume later. macOS does not provide a dedicated per-process bandwidth limit for cloudphotod, however, and there is no verified basis for claiming that every third-party throttling tool is safe.
To stop iCloud Photos synchronization on this Mac, go to Apple menu > System Settings > [your name] > iCloud > Photos under “Saved to iCloud” > turn off “Sync this Mac.” Names and placement may differ on older macOS releases.
After this is disabled, the Mac stops synchronizing new uploads, edits, and deletions through iCloud Photos. The iCloud library remains available to other devices that still have iCloud Photos enabled. Follow the prompt to download originals before turning synchronization off if those files need to remain locally. If “Remove from Mac” is selected, photos and videos that have not been fully downloaded will not remain on the Mac.
Permanently blocking cloudphotod is different from throttling or pausing it. A sustained block prevents photo uploads, downloads, and library changes from completing and may cause repeated retries.

First-time synchronization, large imports, original downloads, and fetching originals under optimized storage can all produce legitimate heavy traffic. The Photos app’s library status is the appropriate first check.
- “Turning iCloud Photos off is the first fix for a stuck sync.” Apple specifically warns against repeatedly turning off iCloud or iCloud Photos while troubleshooting. Doing so can restart the synchronization process rather than resolve it.
Seeing what it actually used
Check the synchronization status in Photos first, then compare it with process-level traffic over the same period.
