What is ClashX Pro on Mac?

ClashX Pro is a third-party menu bar proxy client, not a macOS system process. Its traffic may include connections made on behalf of other apps, so a large total does not by itself mean ClashX Pro is downloading, uploading, or collecting telemetry.
What it is
ClashX Pro is a third-party menu bar proxy client installed by the user. It is not an Apple component and is not required for macOS itself to run. The main application uses the identifier com.west2online.ClashXPro; it can also install a privileged helper named com.west2online.ClashXPro.ProxyConfigHelper for changing proxy-related system configuration.
On the Mac, ClashX Pro provides local HTTP, HTTPS, and SOCKS proxy entry points. It examines the user’s configured rules and decides whether each applicable connection should go directly to its destination or through a configured upstream proxy. The client does not come with a usable proxy server or network service of its own: the user must separately supply nodes or a service provider.
The inspected signed build also offered an “Enhanced Mode.” That mode created a utun interface and changed routing and DNS handling so that ClashX Pro could receive traffic beyond applications that voluntarily follow the normal macOS proxy settings. This behavior is supported by inspection of that build, but it should not be assumed that every modified copy, later fork, or download carrying the same name behaves identically. The original repository has been removed, and the available Clash Premium core does not provide a complete, auditable source match for every distributed build.
Why it talks to the network
When “Set as system proxy” is enabled, applications that respect the macOS proxy configuration connect to a loopback proxy port on the same Mac. ClashX Pro accepts those local connections, applies the configured rules, and then opens an outbound connection either to the selected upstream proxy node or directly to the destination chosen by a rule. This means its network activity is often caused by another application, even though ClashX Pro owns the outward-facing socket.
With “Enhanced Mode” enabled, ClashX Pro can also process IP traffic and DNS requests captured through its utun interface. The result depends on routing, exclusion rules, configuration, the particular build, and the programs generating the traffic. Enhanced Mode expands the range of traffic it can receive, but the verified material does not establish that it captures every connection from every application.
ClashX Pro also makes connections for its own operational tasks. These can include fetching a remote configuration, running latency or health checks against configured nodes, contacting test targets, and sending DNS requests to configured resolvers. There is no single verified list of domains or a universal schedule for those connections. Their destinations and frequency are determined by the user’s configuration, so a specific hostname or polling interval should not be assumed without inspecting that configuration.
How much traffic is normal
There is no reliable universal number for normal ClashX Pro traffic. When little or nothing is using the proxy, it may show only small, intermittent control traffic from configuration updates, DNS activity, or node checks. When multiple applications use it as their route to the network, its recorded total can rise to roughly the same scale as their combined proxied workload.
Streaming video and downloading large files are straightforward examples. If the application performing the task sends its connection through ClashX Pro, the proxy’s externally connected socket can carry the task’s content. Process-level accounting may therefore place a large portion of those bytes under ClashX Pro rather than presenting them solely as traffic from the application the user was watching.
A high byte count is not, by itself, evidence that ClashX Pro is independently downloading files, uploading user data, or performing telemetry. At the same time, not every byte belongs to another application: configuration downloads, DNS requests, latency tests, and health checks can be generated by ClashX Pro itself. Interpretation requires context about which proxy modes were active and what other applications were doing at the same time.
Can you turn it off
You can quit ClashX Pro when you no longer need its proxy path, but doing so changes how the Mac reaches the network. Proxy-based routing, access through remote nodes, Enhanced Mode’s TUN and DNS handling, remote configuration updates, and node tests all stop. Connections that depend on the proxy may fail; others may switch to direct access, depending on the application and the remaining network configuration.
Apple does not provide a dedicated System Settings switch for disabling the ClashX Pro process. The normal shutdown sequence is to open the ClashX Pro menu bar item, turn off “Set as system proxy” and “Enhanced Mode,” and then quit the application. This gives it an opportunity to remove the settings it installed.
Force-quitting the process can leave the macOS proxy configuration pointing at an inactive local address such as 127.0.0.1. If that happens, open System Settings > Network > the current network service > Details > Proxies and remove the stale proxy entries. This path controls macOS proxy settings; it is not a process switch for ClashX Pro. Ending ClashX Pro should therefore be treated as disabling an intentionally configured network route, not as a consequence-free optimization.

- “ClashX Pro is an Apple background process and must not be closed.” It is a third-party application installed by the user. macOS does not require it to operate.
- “ClashX Pro includes a ready-to-use proxy server or network service.” It is a client. The archived project description says that users need to configure their own nodes or obtain service separately.
- “A large Activity Monitor total proves ClashX Pro itself is downloading, uploading, or sending telemetry.” That conclusion does not follow from process-level traffic alone. ClashX Pro owns proxy sockets that can carry requests and content for other applications.
- “Ending it is a harmless way to optimize network performance.” Quitting interrupts the proxy path the user configured. A forced termination can additionally leave macOS pointing at a dead loopback proxy port, causing connections to fail until the stale setting is removed.
- “Turning on the system proxy guarantees that every application goes through ClashX Pro.” Some programs do not follow the macOS HTTP or SOCKS proxy settings and may bypass it. Enhanced Mode broadens interception, but its actual coverage still depends on the build, routing table, exclusions, and configuration.
- “Any download site or new fork using the ClashX Pro name is an official release from the original author.” There is no reliable basis for that assumption. The original repository was deleted, an archived mirror explicitly noted that the project had no official website, and later forks or binaries must be evaluated according to their individual source.
Seeing what it actually used
